Meet the Damez

Wench Press #200

2017 Co-Captain

What is the origin of your derby name and number?

I had no idea that a derby name was so hard to come up with! So I looked on line at other derby names and came up with Wench Press. It made me laugh! My number is 220 lbs. My friend Nerdy helped me with that part!

What is your favorite thing about derby?

I love how mentally and physically challenging roller derby is and how much strategy and strength you need to play the sport. And how quickly the game changes.

What do you do outside of derby?

I work & have a great family. I love my animals & drive my motorcycle as much as possible on weekends to get away.

Random Fact?

I am an avid gardener.

Best Skating Moment?

Passing my assessments & my first MVP Trophy. Winning as a team.

What advice would you give to someone new to skating?

Never give up. Push yourself to the limit. It does not matter how many times you get knocked down, but how many times you get back up. Bend your knees!

The Laurax #23

2017 Co-Captain

What is the origin of your derby name and number?

My derby name originates from one of my favorite authors, Dr. Seuss! I'm an occupational therapist and I work with children, so this playful play on my name, Laura, suits me well! My number 23 is my birthday and has served as my lucky number for many years.

What is your favorite thing about derby?

My favorite thing about derby is the whole body workout, as well as the continuous opportunity for improvement. I love that the game is challenging mentally and physically. My most favorite part is the sense of community and the amazing people you meet, from near and far, who share this passion!!!

What do you do outside of derby?

I am an occupational therapist at an elementary school, working with children to develop motor skills and self-regulation. Some of the same skills I work on and learn through roller derby!

Random Fact?

I like to be upside down... and my feet are two different sizes!

Best Skating Moment?

It is hard to pick just one, but I have to say conquering the 27 laps in 5 minutes. I'll never forget getting pumped up before hand with Smack, listening to the Rocky theme song, then killing it!

What advice would you give to someone new to skating?

Stick with it!! Don't be afraid to try, even if it is unlike ANYTHING you have ever tried before. That is what makes roller derby an amazing adventure!

Demonic Delight #35

What is the origin of your derby name and number?

My sharp tongue and quick wit delivered with a sweet smile is how I got my name, Demonic Delight. My number is a combination of mine and my brothers birth months: 3 and 5.

What is your favorite thing about derby?

My favorite part of roller derby is the strategic game play. I am always trying to out strategize the other team.

What do you do outside of derby?

My life outside of roller derby consists of two adorable pit bulls, Angel and Zeus, and our random hiking adventures and aggressive snuggles.

Random Fact?

I hate being touched.

Best Skating Moment?

Anytime the team comes together and everything flows smoothly, or a skater finally understands something they have worked so hard on.

What advice would you give to someone new to skating?

Don't give up. Don't be afraid of failing. We all failed before we succeeded. Roller derby is a mental game, mental toughness is a must to survive in this sport.

Spark An Burn #77

What is the origin of your derby name and number?

My name is a personal welding reference. My number had changed the times and is now just a random number.

What is your favorite thing about derby?

Lots of things. As vice president, my favorite thing is to watch our little league grow with some of the best people I have ever met. As Co-Captain and Co-Coach, my favorite thing is watching players develop and have their "hey I get it moment". As a player, my favorite thing about derby is playing and having a ton of fun while doing so.

What do you do outside of derby?

Until recently I was a stay at home dog mom to my three amazing pups. I work out often and love hiking and getting outside to enjoy nature.

Random Fact?

I live in the woods and I'm pretty much a hermit.

Best Skating Moment?
There are far to many to pick one! Every moment my league mates are giving their all and having fun are probably my best moments though.

What advice would you give to someone new to skating?

Trust your vets and take all the advice they offer and give 110%. Watch as much derby as possible. Train off skates as well as on. And remember: we all sucked at one point, don't give up.

Smackajawea #88

What is the origin of your derby name and number?

I went back and forth on a derby name for a while. I think Smackajawea is fun to say even if it is a mouthful. I also liked that I could incorporate my real name into it in a subtle way. I guess I chose #88 because I like symmetry? It also makes me think of The Crazy 88 from Kill Bill!

What is your favorite thing about derby?

There is a lot to love about derby. I enjoy how challenging it can be, both physically and mentally. I also think it is a rare thing as an adult woman to be able to participate in a well organized, highly competitive sport that draws spectators. You also meet a lot of amazing people and it is inspiring to be around so many strong women who can be tough as nails and sweet as pie.

What do you do outside of derby?

I love to bake, garden, do random arts and crafts, play with my kitties, talk about getting a dog someday, and participate in anything competitive.

Random Fact?

My Maternal Great Grandparents were both in the circus. My Great Grandmother was in a high diving act and my Great Grandfather was a clown. My Grandmother met my Grandfather when she was a teenager and ran away with the circus. I recently took some circus classes to get in touch with my roots! As it turns out, I am quite bendy.

Best Skating Moment?

I have not been skating very long, so I don’t have much of a highlight reel yet. I have been told that I take some pretty epic falls though. I like to add a little drama.

What advice would you give to someone new to skating?

Derby is fun but derby is hard. This is a real sport played by real athletes. You have to be willing to put in the work. It doesn’t get easier but you will get better. Show up and play hard and it will all be worth it.

TenderizeHer #810

What is the origin of your derby name and number?

TenderizeHer found me one day at practice. We were doing a hitting drill and another Dame said I was Tenderizing her arm, and it just felt right! My number is the are code for Metro Detroit, where I hail from. I little tip of the hat to Mom and Dad back home.

What is your favorite thing about derby?

I love that derby is just as much mental as it is physical. In all aspects you choose how far you want to push yourself. Also, I've been amazed by how supportive and welcoming the derby community is!

What do you do outside of derby?

I pay my bills by teaching third and fourth grade, and I really do love my job! I am also an avid runner, currently training for a half marathon. Begin in the outdoors refuels me whether hiking or kayaking, and I am working my way through climbing all off the mountains over 4,000 feet in New Hampshire.

Random Fact?

The summer before I went away to college I worked as a 'pickle packer' in a Vlasic Plant... sounds much more fun than it actually was.

Best Skating Moment?

There have been quiet a few, but the best is something simple. I remember having this moment when all at once I realized I wasn't over thinking it anymore. I was no longer thinking about falling, how to stand, or where I should be on the track. I was just doing it... and it was fun! Bliss on wheels.

What advice would you give to someone new to skating?

Don't be afraid to try new things, and ask questions. I haven't ran across anyone yet in the derby community who hasn't been willing to help in any way they can. I can't believe what I've been able to achieve with the support of my team!
